LOL Dave -

Both CRX's have a proper title of Civic CRX (CRX actually means Civic Renaissance - model X, which makes "Civic CRX" like saying ATM machine.)

Characteristically, the 1st gen CRX is a match to the 3rd gen Civic, and the 2nd gen CRX is a match to the 4th gen Civic. They share many features, engines, interior and exterior design cues.

Chassis platforms are the same for each respective series.

However, the CRX still gained it's own generation marker due to the differences that it did have, and the fact that it was meant to be a "revamped, race ready" version of the original Civic. It was a 2-seater sports model that wasn't meant to be comfortable as much as go-ready, and was (speculatively) meant to break off into it's own division and chassis line, which obviously never happened. (Or did it? Insight, FCX?)

Now there is a new generation that is exacted from the CRX in development and prototype... it's called the CR-Z.. and it looks like a work boot.
