Good point.
Still, I'd like to see them making much smaller vehicles that will get 50-60 mpg and STILL carry a lot of stuff. There's no reason why this can't be done. Lots of small and mid-size hatch vehicles these days could do it but are overpowered and also have "performance" gearing instead of FE gearing. Golf, Mazda 3, Scion small boxes, Focus wagon, etc. etc.
Shucks, my '89 Volvo wagon got me 25-30 mpg hypermiling (auto tranny, no lockup), and I'd guess it can carry more than the GM beast. Volvo's payload is 1200 lb! A dryer or refrigerator will fit in the cargo area - ya don't even need to drop the back seat for the dryer, if I recall.
