Actually, with the comments above about diesels and CF cars I disagree on one point. Don't go diesel. GDI is right around the corner from being able to initiate ultra-lean burn with a flip of a switch on your ECU. Not that gasoline is superior to diesel, but gasoline is far easier to produce than diesel.
The infrastructure around Diesel would cause serious demand issues. All major ground freight runs on diesel and it would force all of those prices up while manufacturers are still going to be producing gasoline by nearly 2x as much as diesel. It also takes a substantial amount more energy/pollution to create 1 gallon of diesel opposed to 1 gallon of gas. A turbocharged 1l with ultra-lean highway cruise ability of 60:1 with a 1200 lb curb weight and a small solar panel to run parisitic functions(or preheat the motor in the winter) could realize the ability to get up to speed quickly on the ramp and then cruise at 60 MPH on a very few horses off even less fuel.
