road bikes vary from $100 for old "decent" to brand new decked $2000 road bikes here. This weekend a buddy picked up a good quality Cannondale for $300. BB is shot, but that's a cheap fix considering this frame elsewhere has sold for closer to $1000.

Don't let old bikes fool you, while shifters on the brake levers are nice, downtube shifters don't always suck, and gears are gears. it's steel, and always will be steel. Tires and rims are where you can make the biggest differences in ride quality. Find one with a good frame and a good wheelset. Ride it till you can afford small one piece upgrades. Slowly make it awesome. Craigslist and pinkbike.com are great sources for cheap quality. You just have to be patient.
