Wanted: Road Bike

Looking for a road bike to get started, I believe around 54cm, 22.5" frame (I'm 5'9") anybody in the northeast Boston/NH have a lead? I'd be looking for something used for under $100, just needs to be rideable so I can get back into riding.

Have you checked out CL? I don't know anyone selling for that cheaply besides maybe CL.

I would try to look for something late 70s or newew though, you'll like yourself more. Or something with 700c wheels instead of 27"

Yeah i've been keeping an eye on NH CL, (I will be moving there in a few weeks) some older ones for sale, once I am in the area on a weekend or get a bike rack for the trunk of my car i'll do a little more investigating, i've only seen two for under $100 so far, one at $40 and one at $75.

Why are road bikes so crazy expensive? even old ones are ridiculous.

Because my 78 Voyageur is still in good condition and very rideable after 31 years of abuse (unless it get hit by a snow plow this winter)

Where in NH are you moving?

Seems to be a regional thing. In my hometown bikes aren't valued very much. Go to KMart or WalMart and get another one for $80 when the tires go flat. I can pick em up for free from curbside or junkyard all day long here.

Out in Cali, quite a few of the bikes on CL were $1000+!!! And the local bike shops didn't have much of anything under $500. Sorry, after getting used to free bikes, I really doubt that extra $500-$1000-$more buys any extra riding pleasure.

Clearly you've never ridden a $7,000 bicycle

Southern, just outside of Nashua, my job moved from NY to MA so I'm driving out during the weeks right now and after the honeymoon I'll be living out there full time.

$7000? Nope. But I have ridden quality bikes. They are nicer but not $500 nicer.

road bikes vary from $100 for old "decent" to brand new decked $2000 road bikes here. This weekend a buddy picked up a good quality Cannondale for $300. BB is shot, but that's a cheap fix considering this frame elsewhere has sold for closer to $1000.

Don't let old bikes fool you, while shifters on the brake levers are nice, downtube shifters don't always suck, and gears are gears. it's steel, and always will be steel. Tires and rims are where you can make the biggest differences in ride quality. Find one with a good frame and a good wheelset. Ride it till you can afford small one piece upgrades. Slowly make it awesome. Craigslist and pinkbike.com are great sources for cheap quality. You just have to be patient.
