It's a lot easier to get better mpg's with a little more aerodynamic car, even if the EPA rates most of the cars on this site in the low-mid 30's most of us can get over 40 pretty easily, can a smart car easily get 30% over it's EPA estimates? I'm sure with some careful driving you could do ok, but it seems like it's easier to improve with a car that slips through the air a little easier.
Edit: Now I can't help but think about somebody trying to cut down a tree using a smart4two.
