Shovel,

If you're leery of the LBS, there is another option. Try a bicycle co-op and learn how to repair the shock yourself. Here are a few co-ops in your area.

Bicycle Co-Op - Phoenix, Arizona

Bike Saviours – Tempe's Bicycle Collective

Handlebar Helpers - Scottsdale

FWIW,
Tim

I have noticed some NEXT full suspension mountain bikes in the juke yard or at the curb without wheels but the rear shock in place. Apparently the wheel bearings and brakes wear out fast on these bikes. The shock might be of sterner stuff.
