What else do I want? I want not having to subsidize someone else's lack of responsibility. I have better things to do with my money than the equivalent of tossing it down the toilet in paying for someone else's car crash.

Let's see: payment of mandatory insurance @ $500 per car for over 40 years. You can do the math. And what did I get for it in return? Did it protect me or make me any safer? The few accidents I've had were someone else's fault and I had to play hardball in negotiations with their insurance companies to extract a settlement from them and get paid for their negligence.

This obviously doesn't bother you. (It bothers no one who thinks that redistribution of wealth is a good idea.) If you think it's such a wonderful idea, you can pay my insurance premiums from now on.

Who pays? Who benefits?

WTF?

My goal is to give the insurance companies as little as legally possible.

Yah, Thyme gets moody about reality sometimes, hasn't offered any viable alternatives yet though.

So do you actually pay per mile Frank? Not trying to sound glib, just want to be sure I understand if it is "be good and get %30 off" or if it is actually mileage based or something in between?

They've not said anything about miles but I know I'm far below average in annual miles accrued. So no I don't pay by the mile, I pay in full every 6 months FOR ANOTHER DISCOUNT!!!

It's be good and get UP to 30% off, or $50 off, whichever is smaller I presume.

But can they deny any claims if you do? Oh, well, progressive denies all claims anyway so nevermind :-P

Seriously though, there are a lot of complaints on the payout side of progressive. If I get hit by a progressive card holder with serious damage, I may just save some time and take the errant driver to court for damages + costs and let them sort it out w/their insurance company.

Yah, DCB doesn't comprehend what I write sometimes. Apparently he doesn't understand what "self-insured" means.

Unfortunately the mandatory aspect of auto liability insurance doesn't allow anyone to opt out, for any reason. (It's supposedly a precedent for forcing mandatory healthcare insurance on us as well.)

And then they'd prosecute you for meddling with their equipment.

What is disheartening is the realization that it is another small step toward loss of freedom, bought by offering a rate discount.

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." (Just substitute the words "rate discount" for temporary safety.)

I've inquired to many govt agencies re: self insurance and not a soul knows anything about it. :/
