Why? Moving to a place with jobs seems to be the only path away from your current state of underemployment. If you don’t want to leave your brother and mother take them with you.

This is a curious question to me. Why won’t people move to opportunity. As I’ve noted in other posts I grew up in a dying (now dead) GM town. The people that left are doing well. The people we know that stayed have had 2 decades of struggle: underemployment, poor schools, lack of public services, etc. They are down to one (bad) grocery store for a population of 50,000. (Down from 100,000)

I moved from Eugene to Tualatin/Tigard/Beaverton to get the first decent job after the Army (the business moved twice in five years). Then when Symantec moved to Eugene, I moved back. Left one job on Friday and started the new on on the next Monday. Plus I got to live in a geodesic dome for seven years.

One does not simply move family by clubbing them and dragging them by their hair into your cave.

The problem with the middle of nowhere is it there tends to be a lot less job opportunity. Unless there's heavy industrial stuff around like where I am.

No you don't. That takes sitting down together and having an adult discussion about the lack of jobs where you live today and the availability of jobs in more populated areas and how you being employed full time can benefit the entire family. If your mother doesn't want to move with you so you both can enjoy a better life then that is her decision not yours.

If I stayed in the small town I'm from in Maine I would be poor just like everyone else.

I live in Bumf***, Egypt, where the nearest metro areas are two hours away. The local bidness and gummint wannabes are doing their darndest to attract every stray they can sucker into moving here. It's working; there must be a lot of desperate breeders from Tayksass, Missery, and ND because there's a whole lotta them busy tearing up and down the streets here now.

The thing is, there are plenty of existing clusterf***s to choose from. All these small town dopes are hell-bent on creating more.

So the streets of New York are deserted except for feral animals, but small town everywhere is over-run?
