Most successful v8 cars?

I read a long post here about a impala wagon with crazy mods, and I've been thinking about it ever since. Like, what other V8 cars got close to or over 40 mpg?

My son's Silverado with cylinder deactivation.

Xist just found a 2008 Impala SS for $900 in AZ.

If you're going to do all those modifications, I'd start with a 1991-96 Buick Roadmaster They came with a moon roof and fender skirts.

I heard the 2011 mustang 4.0 6 banger was a 40mpg car out of the gate, I thought someone would have cashed in on that already

I wouldn't hold my breath for that, specifically, but let's consider some 6-cyl engines are very close in displacement to the smallest V8 within the range of its manufacturer. With fewer moving parts and internal frictions, maybe a V6 into a full-size car could fare much better than a V8 regarding fuel economy, and not so bad performance-wise.

40 mpg under light throttle on medium-speed highway cruising doesn't mean the car will average 40 mpg under all situations.
