I have installed a MPGuino for several years now. (A purchased version)
I resorted to buying a Jcars module to square up the injector pulses.
I have been trying since to calculate an accurate MPG reading.
With a 100 gallon tank makes it a problem. A full tank test is like 2-3 days of driving. 700 to 900 miles (Or more).
The VSS pulses/mile came out to 7847
The Micro sec/gallon is 342228128
I left all other things at default.
The problem with the setup is the 'Guino lies! The mpg shown at 50 mpg is 8 but the mpg at 70 is 10-12. If you follow what happens, then I begin to chase the mileage by driving faster. Not good. I force myself to drive between 50 to 55 MPH. Anything faster kills the mpg.
My actual best mileage, no toad, is 20 mpg. This happened only once, but I've seen 15 mpg before.
I usually get 10mpg now, but I think the ethanol is killing the better mileage.
I like Shell regular. 3 mpg better.
Another thing that I notice is the instant fuel mileage goes to 999 when I get more than 75% throttle. This tells me the calculations quit in that circumstance.
I don't have any source code to try and figure that out. Maybe dcb can help there.
here is the info I get with the 'Guino is how to drive the "Beast".
#1 accelerate briskly to 45 mph. Lift the throttle to get into 4th gear, clutch locked up. This gets you rolling and get the rig into the best mpg.
#2 Ease on the gas to get up to 55mph. Feather the gas to reset to lean burn.
Check the mpg often and lift and depress the gas to reset to lean burn. You can see 2 to 5 mpg improvement.
#3 Gently speed up to go up a hill. The trick here is to hold the throttle perfectly still while climbing. The engine will hold lean burn and you will slow down some but crest a moderate hill in good mileage. If you press down the pedal you will jump out of lean burn to like 3 - 4 mpg! Just lift momentarily and press down to coax it back to better mileage.
#4 On a big hill I just let the tranny shift down and climb up at whatever mileage I get. Just be sure to lift when starting to crest the hill. Then coast down the other side.
While coasting down a hill the 'Guino says 999 meaning the injectors are off and no fuel is used. I have found if you let the speed drop too much you will use a lot of gas speeding up. Just apply light throttle to hold the speed you want.
I hope this helps. You won't need a 'Guino by following these tips. If you install a vacuum gauge it will show you what the 'Guino does.
The above applies to about all vehicles.
