Back in 08' and 09' Toyota was pushing sales of the Prius over its smaller less expensive "cousin" the Yaris. As a result I really suspected the 29MPG city 36MPG highway was "contrived a bit" by Toyota to sell the more expensive and heavier Prius. Yes the Prius gets better MPG until you actually load in to full weight rating.
Anyway I was so sure I was right in 09' that I bought one, the 5spd hatchback. In the words of Gomer Pyle "sha-zam!" that little car never gets under 40 MPG. Surprise! Surprise! Even at 108,000 miles. For full disclosure: tire are aired up to 41lbs, not 32 has the door sticker requires.
Plus I did upgrade the lackluster suspension from stock to coil over D2 Racing suspension for drive ability. I was up to 43.7 MPG until I raise the suspension close to stock Height a few months back, but still managed to hold unto 40 to 41 MPG.
My goal remains the same 50 mpg, without home built aero mods. This is still my daily driver, so no surprises by less than fully engineered and tested updates.
