Robot Cantina does a grill block, front belly pan, and mirror delete.

Jimbo also installs an exhaust gas temperature gauge and adjusts the injector pump fuel limit.

He put spares on the front in order to use fifth gear and reached a higher top speed, but the car was slower overall, although it was still slow once he restored the correct tires, so clearly he needs to figure out what else is going on with an engine with 8 hours of run time.

I templated his car:

How high resolution should your picture be when you do this? That car is 52.2" tall and it is 175 pixels tall in that picture, so so each pixel is .3". The template indicates the back of the spoiler is 4.176" too low, but it could be between 3.876" and 4.476"

Resolution is not the problem, it's focal length. You want a telephoto shot.

Someone claimed that the grill block made the car less aerodynamic--there isn't much in the engine bay.

Someone else, who seems to have a crush on Julian, said "One does not simply use a template! You need to use CFD and wind tunnel analysis!"

A template is indicative of two-dimensional thinking, what?!

He or she ordered me to template these:

I haven't seen an un-riced Opel Calibra for a while... The Daewoo Espero is also fading away. The Opel Kadett E can still be found quite easily, yet it's not so easy to see any so close to stock anymore.

He said that he wants to pursue aerodynamic modifications because the engine's giving it all she's got, Capt'n!

This is a science project, not a daily driver, so I suggested adding to the back to it resembles the Insight.

No! The only options are CFD and extensive wind tunnel testing!

Cool.

I don't envision Jimbo building a wind tunnel to satisfy one commenter.

Maybe Mark Rober...

...to test windbreakers...

Let's say he builds a Kamm-back with cardboard-aided design, he tuft-tests, modifies, and repeats.

Science!

You mean that Kubota engine? I'm actually surprised it's being used for such a project, at all... Well, the Opel Kadett E was quite an aerodynamic benchmark back in the day.

Jimbo gets a forsaken 80s Volkswagen diesel engine working.

He is going to swap it into the Insight and then swap in the Harbor Freight v-twin engine.

Even such an "outdated" engine might do wonders in an early Insight bodyshell.

He modified other engines, so I am interested to see what he does with this!

Of course, if he kept the last engine, and just did proper aeromods he would see real improvements!

I dreamed of a world where I could just pick up an old red Saturn and a 10-pack of coroplast from Home Depot and said "Hey Jimbo, this is how it is done!"

Considering how Volkswagen engines are quite modular, and the Diesels still share some design features with the older EA827, it might be quite interesting and there will be a lot of room for improvements. Basically just like making a whole new engine out of an old block...
