Show off your Grille Block

I do not know about stop and go with mine, but it would start overheating if I kept up with traffic and\or was going up a hill, but it gets warm here in Arizona.

I still have not fixed my bumper, but I will close the opening that I cut in it. We will see what that does.

I live in Canada, it's winter now and I don't want to spend too much time outside.
Here's my fast, cheap & easy version.
Used pipe insulation at Home Depot, only $3 for a 6ft (2m) tube.
Cut the tube in two 3 ft pieces and nudged them in between the horizontal grille bars and pushed both ends through the last left & right openings. The foam tube ends extend maybe 6" inside the bumper but do not touch the radiator. Didn't use any glue, tape or zip-ties. Almost a week later they are still in place.

There's a small area below the license plate where the foam allows some air, so approximately 90-95% of the lower grille opening is blocked.

When spring/summer come, I will probably try another grille block.

Thought I should share mine. Nothing fancy, but it works.




It is made from 3mm thick coroplast cut and folded. Darker lines are due weakened coroplast - I made v-shaped ridges on back side to easier and cleaner folding. The cover helds in place thanks to flaps tucked to gaps between lights and grille, under the hood and behind the license plate. Secured by shoelace :-] - removable without tools. (more pics here.)

Lost my upper acetate block in the car wash I think. The new Lexan one doesn't have a whole for the outside air temp sensor yet.

Here is my first eco mod. I added an upper grille block to my Diesel Cruze. The upper grille was already restricted to the area not blocked off by the coroplast, I just completed it. The lower grille has active shutters that close at highway speeds. I have a gauge to monitor IAT and ECT and look to add some ambient thermocouples to monitor underwood temps when spring rolls around.

I built a partial grille block from a rubbermaid office trashcan and zip-tied it to the grille for my Jeep MJ, pictured. Since the 2.5s run hot I did not wish to block it entirely for year-round daily driver use.



Also shown a homebuilt lower air dam which was made from an 80s S-10 air dam riveted to the factory one; it is reinforced behind with angle iron mounted to the sway bar mounts. The dam does not quite go down as far as I would like as the lower control arms are still visible... but both the dam and grille blocks have held up since 2014 with no issues. I have since gorilla-taped the gaps above and below the bumper, which has also held up despite it being tape.

This block is several years old but just now I cut two shutters into it on the driver's side. I used to take it out for above freezing temps because my fanless truck told me to. Perhaps it can stay year-around now.





The shutters in the coro have living hinges but the great part is the latching system- simply a bevel cut such that I force the shutter past the bevel to lock it shut, all from a grille opening. I only closed one shutter in the second pic for show but they both operate the same. Singly or in tandem, as conditions dictate.

The mis-matches between grille openings and block were necessary to clear the various supports and whatnot behind the grille yet in front of the radiator. Some flat black paint will help the aesthetics.

The hole on the passenger side has no shutter as it's for the trans cooler and is always open.

Today I saw very nice looking grille block made of smoked polycarbonate, seemingly made by some aftermarket company called HEKO. Quick googling showed they reside in Poland, but maybe they will ship overseas or have a dealer. I haven´t checked. They make grille blocks for some european cars /VW, Skoda, Renault. - have a look:
