I always wonder why we get ads for things nobody is going to buy? I'm not going to buy a fleet of Boeing 777, so why the advertisement? Lockheed Martin; not going to buy an F35 anytime soon. GE, I was thinking about installing a hydroelectric plant and didn't realize they were an option until I saw their advertisement.

My guess is advertising is mostly a con on the company employing the advertising. It can't be that effective. I've never clicked an online ad, and I suspect that isn't that uncommon.

My evidence is that Tesla doesn't run conventional ads.

... that said, I worked with a guy who couldn't say no to anything. We'd be playing disc golf and a guy in the parking lot was selling beef out of the back of his pickup truck, and he had to say yes. I was selling a gaming PC and he had to say yes. He also borrowed money on 3 occasions because he couldn't make rent. His view was that us folk that are thinking about money are evil, because "the love of money is the root of all evil". Asking others who make a lot less money for a loan is wise, apparently.

Love the guy; he's great. Just don't ask him for financial or marriage advice.

I've clicked many just out of curiosity, even though I wouldn't buy. Sure that might not be so effective, but maybe if I knew someone willing to buy random stuff I saw advertised online, if I could remember an ad I clicked simply out of curiosity.........

Online ads are so relatively cheap that even one person buying an item might make enough profit to pay for the ads. Get two purchases of this type and you are generating profit even if you get 10,000 clicks.

Maybe it's like art, a conduit for laundering money.

Ads must work. If they didn't then companies wouldn't pay for them.

Scams also work. Scams and ads are similar, but one is legal and the other isn't.

If you try to convince everyone you meet that they need a particular something eventually you'll find someone who will believe you.

I guess advice in general is kind of like ads, only without the interest in profit since there is no profit in giving out advice. Part of the reason I went for the Toyota Avalon was because Slowmover convinced me I'd be safer in a bigger car. I could have bought a more economical car if I hadn't listened.

Maybe pickup trucks are so wide because someone goes around giving out advice to car manufacturers telling them they should make their trucks wide.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that way...

Recall in a psychology class an observation of human randomness: standing on a street corner propositioning pretty ladies, 19 out of 20 might slap your face. The 20th might agree.

Might no longer be valid. Was 50 years ago. Did stick in my mind, never tried it.

Whenever I hire a ride in South America, the drivers have the window down and yell "aye, muņeca" to every woman we pass by. Never, not once saw any driver get a reaction at all.

Where in South America? I don't see it happening so often in Brazil, and never seen it in Uruguay.
