finished grill block; no check engine light = success
Still not sure whether the check engine light was due to a temperature rise (didn't see the temp gague go up at all) or due to some kind of air flow or fan sensor.

SOAB! The check engine light didn't have anything to do with the grill block. I scanned for codes after I received my Scangague and I pulled a P0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold). Having just bought the car a month ago I'm a bit PO'd that they didn't catch/fix this in their emissions inspection of the car... Bought the vehicle "as is" so it's mine to deal with now.
