It would be nice if they would put it in a basic 2 door fiesta for $13000 but we know that's not going to happen.

Why would they want something that sounds like 1/4th of a V12 to sound like a tinny, droning I4? The sound of I-3s is unusual, but if you tune out the high pitches with proper exhaust tuning, the slightly off-beat note sounds properly sporting.

Shame... but honestly, that's not any slower than an automatic Lancer or Honda Fit.

Or that turd, the 2011 Jetta 2.0 base automatic... Every time I see one, I pity the driver, then 10 seconds later I start laughing at how they got ripped off.

I think that engine is pretty awesome, but I was wondering, why not just make a 4 cylinder 1.0L and avoid all the problems inherent to 3 cylinders?

Exactly. Nobody wants to admit they blew nearly $30k on a 3 banger. Look at the Smart car. Not so smart.

More parts ~ less efficiency.

More parts also equals smaller parts.
One of the big difficulties with direct injection is packaging. If you're going to have direct injection and more cylinders in a small package, you're going to have to sacrifice valve space to make it work. Keeping the 1.0 3 cylinders allows them to have more space in each combustion chamber to pack the valves, injector and spark plug.
