I tried to guess what would be on the list, and fared poorly. I's outta the loop! I've never really cared about acceleration performance. I hear it's addictive. (I drove a 4-cylinder Suzuki Swift once!!) Slippery slope? 12) Chevrolet Cruze 31/48 mpg city/highway (sedan); 30/45 mpg (hatchback) 0-60 mph: 8.4 seconds (hatch) 11) Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 40/46 mpg (SE) 8.3 seconds 10) Lexus ES 300h 43/45 mpg 7.8 seconds 9) Volkswagen Jetta 30/40 mpg 7.6 seconds 8) Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid 37/42 mpg 7.6 seconds 7) Honda Clarity Plug-In 44/40 mpg 7.5 seconds 6) Chevrolet Volt 43/42 mpg 0-60 mph: 7.5 seconds 5) Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid 49/43 mpg 7.4 seconds 4) Toyota Camry Hybrid LE 51/53 mpg 7.4 seconds 3) Honda Insight 55/49 mpg (LX, EX) 7.3 seconds 2) Honda Civic Touring Sedan 32/42 mpg 6.8 seconds 1) Honda Accord Hybrid 48/48 mpg 6.7 seconds Read the article: https://www.motortrend.com/news/12-q...igher-highway/ |
The Camry is up to 51/53 now? That's impressive.

This list omits EV's.
Even a "boring" base Nissan Leaf does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds with the small battery; 6.5 seconds with the optional larger battery, according to MT. Quick enough to beat all these gassers. I suspect people still have the impression that EV's are slow (with some exceptions... Tesla). A friend of mine (who's a "car guy") recently bought a GTI. He commutes 180 km / ~110 mi daily. He said he would have loved a Tesla 3, but for the cost. I asked why he didn't go for a cheaper Chevy Bolt instead, and he said "too slow" (though he admitted he didn't research the numbers). We looked it up, and the Bolt is within a tenth or two to 60 as quick as his GTI. |

Recently saw a Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor with the Performance Package. I had never heard of it. The guy driving it said 0-60 in something like 3.x seconds and then left me staring at his taillights at the stop light. I had the windows down and hardly heard a sound. He said something about if you saw the Tesla with a red line below the emblems it had the performance package. I haven't read about it yet but his car was pretty impressive.

Interesting list. I'm planning to buy a Civic this year.

Interesting to see the Sonata plug-in is faster to 60, but has a significantly lower MPG rating. I wonder why that is?
Seems the Accord hybrid is the one to get. Prius-like fuel economy without Prius-like acceleration. All that said, my next personal vehicle will be an EV. |
How about a new #1?
50+ MPG highway cruising, 0-60 <4.5 seconds (and<4 seconds with different tires). The shop that helped me with much of the fabrication had some explicit words for me when I told them I still haven't exceeded 75mph. https://i.imgur.com/fRvpaN5.jpg |
