1978 chevy stepside

I was getting 12mpg in combined driving in my 1978 Chevy C10 Step Side Shortbed with a 250 straight six and three speed manual. I put in a T5, and my mpg shot up to "ALMOST" 17mpg...more than 40% improvement.

Hah! I love those old 70s beasts... my '74 F350 got ~10.5 mpg.

Tallest geared vehicle I ever owned was my 92 F150. 2.73 rear end and a .80 overdrive.
I managed 20 MPG on the highway at 70 MPH. One time at night I drove 10 miles before I realized it was in 4th gear instead of 5th.

Overall final drive ratio of 2.18. Tires were 26 inches. 1550 RPM at 60 MPH.

Would a 2.2 L chevy s10 with a 5 spd pull 2.41 gears? Interstate use only... Want t see abou getting truck to 35+ mpg.. Thoughts?
