Congrats on the Brick! It'll be fun to play with if nothing else. My dad and I put a 5.0 into 1980 264 back in the late 1990's. That car was a blast, especially when it still had the faded out original paint and little Hondas with big mufflers would want to race me at stop lights.
We were always a Volvo family and still are for the most part, I'm the heretic with a Pontiac but I was tired of my 850 and lost my interest in the company once they started driving the wrong set of wheels... so I bought a $200 2000 Sunfire that got 30mpg "out of the box" and I'm up to 35mpg combined now. I routinely got 30 highway mpg in my 1985 Turbo wagon 5spd.

If you do a search online you'll find that it's really easy to flush the trans fluid on those cars. You can do it in about 30min (the first time) with the car still sitting on the ground. Valve adjustments aren't bad either and you can probably find some other volvo nut around there to swap shims with if you have any out of spec.

Who said anything about getting a better car?
