One of the most common mods is to block the front grille - partially or completely. Smooth hubcaps are another easy option.
Change your driving habits.
Drive slower - or go all the way on aerodynamic mods like basjoos'
AeroCivic.
Idle less, restart without pressing down the throttle.
Look even further ahead. If you'll need to stop or reduce speed further on, start coasting.
You'll coast for a surprisingly long distance, and any aero mod you make will increase that distance.
When you need to slow down :
Coasting in neutral with the engine off is most fuel efficient.
It does increase the workload while driving, and the boost to your brakes will drop off, leaving you with unassisted brakes.
Try this out well away from other traffic on a safe, straight stretch of road.
Coasting in neutral with the engine on is still more efficient than engine braking (releasing throttle) when this cuts off the flow of fuel to the engine.
Your 1987 car might not yet cut the fuel flow when you release the throttle completely - that effect is known as DFCO - so you might gain even more.
Engine braking is more efficient than using the brakes.
Buy low rolling resistance tyres when you need new rubber.
