1zz Celica Gear Ratio
So, I have a 2001 Celica and I beleive the syncro in 3rd is starting to go out. If I have to rebuild/replace the 5 speed transmission is there a better geared transmission? corolla?
I know there must be other transmissions that will bolt to the 1zzfe engine with a better FE ratio but I am having a hard time finding any information about the gear ratio in the celicas or anyother vehicle. Any help would be appreciated. |

Here is some more directly related to your Gen Celica
"C60 Gear ratios for this transmission. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th Reverse Final 3.166 2.050 1.481 1.166 0.916 0.725 3.250 4.529 Applications: Toyota Celica 2000-2005" |
And if you have a 5 speed:
C59 A 5-Speed Manual Transmission for FWD cars. Similar to C52 but stronger. Gear ratios for this transmission. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Reverse 3.166 1.904 1.310 0.969 0.815 3.250 Final drives Engine Final drive 1ZZ-FE 3.941 |
I know I could not take a C60 trans and bolt it to a 4AGE block. People who do it wind up swapping the cases to make it work. So you would need to do the same (case swap) to use a C52, C160, or corrola transmsison. I remember there was some highly geared corrola or tercel transmission, but forget what code it was. I always wanted to combine a 4AFE setup with that tranmission, but never did. Instead I just used the C160 with a 4aGe 16v, silvertop 20v, and eventually a blacktop 20v. Those were more performace driven but still got 40+ mpg.

Hello there, I've got the same engine/transmission as you.
All of the actual gearsets for any of the 1ZZ/2ZZ transmissions work with each other, so what you'd be looking for is either a 0.725 5th gear (pulled from a manual transmission Corolla, or bought from Toyota directly (about 230 dollars) or monkeywrenchracing (a little more than Toyota I think, but easier to order), or a whole new transmission with the 3.9something final drive ratio. Since you have a Celica and not an MR2 things are easier since the shift linkages don't need modification. The best place to look is junked Corollas, because there's no way you're going to find an intact 6 speed to pull stuff from. I'm not sure how easy a MT Corolla transmission is to find though. They go for 2000 dollars on the market. While you're only dropping highway rpm ~10%, it might be worth it since the 1ZZ loses efficiency pretty fast over 3000rpm, and 3500rpm is only about 64mph in these cars (if you have the same tire diameter as me, which I am not 100% sure about). If you get the Corolla final drive as well you'll have 20% ish rpm reduction which will be very significant, but your acceleration will suffer a bit especially since these are 5 speeds not 6, and the gear ratios have a rather wide spread in 1-4. By the way, as a fellow early 1ZZ owner, does your engine burn oil? I still haven't driven this 1000 miles yet, but I did get an oil change and the oil level has been dropping slowly but surely (thankfully well under the 1qt/1000 miles that some people see, it's dropped about 1.5mm on the dipstick after 600 miles). Bit of a problem because I'd like to use synthetic oil to lower cold start viscosity, but I don't want it burning off and wasting it. With the high rpms these engines turn thanks to the transmission I feel like oil plays a big part in fuel economy. |

The C50 is what the 1NZs are mated to, and in all honesty they're not geared too bad at 3.722 final drive ratio. The 0.725 5th gear for the C56/C59/C60etc. might work in the C50 but I can't say as I've never heard of anyone doing it. It's known that the C60 bolts to 1ZZs without too much trouble, and someone has done a 1NZ + C60 combo but he made a custom adapter plate and some slight modifications to make it work. |
I'm pretty sure the 8th gen corolla's FD is 3.722. Then in the 9th gen it switched to 3.9

The 3.722 final and the .725 fifth is as good as it gets for Toyota Corollas.
