2.8L Cummins Diesel Pickup
 

I came accross an interesting pickup:

It's called the Foton Tunland. It's made in China and sold in Australia & South Africa. It's powered by a 2.8L inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel:

It also has a 5-speed manual Getrag transmission

I can't find the link right now, but I read somewhere that the engine is rated for 300,000 miles.

While we can't buy the truck in the US, there's till some hope--Cummins has been working with Nissan to put the same 2.8L engine in their 1/2 ton pickup:

I know Cummins and Nissan have been working on this truck for years. If it ever comes to market, maybe Nissan will actually sell a few pickups again! And man would a truck like that ever sell....

I'm not much for diesel myself, but what are the current diesel options in pickups in America?

Chevrolet/GMC, Ford, and Dodge full size... Nothing else?

There were the diesel Isuzu P'ups in the 1980s, and Chevy LUVs. I believe there was a few diesel Ford Rangers back in the boxier days?

Man, we've been deprived in America.

Currently, the only offerings (by GM, Ford, & Dodge) are for 3/4-ton trucks and larger. GM comes with the 6.6L V8 Duramax, Ford comes with the 6.7L V8 Powerstroke, & Dodge with the 6.7L inline-6 Cummins.

That engine has similar specs as the VM Motori engine in my Jeep CRD. It would be nice to have a moderately sized diesel pickup available here without having to swap engines and deal with the bureaucratic documentation and licensing.

The jeep grand cherokee and Ram 1500 will be getting the same 3.0 V6 diesel from VM. Both should show up at Detroit in a couple of weeks.

I try not to be a cinic, but I've heard 1/2-ton diesels promised so many times, for so many years, by so many companies, that I'm not going to believe anything until I see it on the lot.
