2000 Avalon 30.9 mpg

Hey everyone, new to the forum but have known about hypermiling for about 15 yrs. have tried it a little here and there but usually halfway through a tank my brain would escape hypermiling mode. Last few days I wanted to try it again and stick with it. My 2000 Toyota Avalon usually gets 23-24 mpg average, 223k on the clock, V6 3.0 4 speed auto and 3,400 lbs. EPA rates it at 21 city 29 hwy. Filled tires up to 44 psi, driving wise acted like an egg was between my foot and the gas pedal, reading stop lights and cross walk timers, lots of coasting (in gear) car coasts forever, shutting the car off anytime I sat. Filled the car up and got 30.9 mpg. My drive consisted of 40% stop and go city driving and 60% 2 lane curvy mountain roads of 45-55 mph. I was very surprised at that number with just basic hypermiling techniques.

This tank I’m putting the car in neutral while coasting and shutting it off at lights. At 200 miles I’m at 3/4 of a tank, size is 18.5 gallons. Hoping to beat the 30.9 mpg from the last tank

Way to go; keep it up!

I use 30 mpg as sort of a benchmark as in under 30 is clearly a fail; 30 and over is nice; and way over 30 is a win. I mean, 70 years ago family haulers could achieve 30 ARE WE NOT BETTER THAN THAT? As you can see some of my junk did not make 30 and I'm soooooo disappointed.

Thank you! Do you think 40 mpg would be realistic? I would be ecstatic if I got 35 mpg.

I think 40 would be very, very tough to achieve.

I think 35 might be realistic but it would be a bit more extreme in terms of hypermiling techniques. I think a goal of 33 MPG without getting absolutely crazy is realistic

So this last tank I got 30.8 mpg. I think the long hills that I hit yesterday hurt me. Hopefully 31-32 on this tank is achievable.
