Cheapy USB Serial OBDII Ebay Purchase Help

I got the gizmo today. Seems well enough built Installed the drivers plugged in it so far so good but "nothing" when I run the program it says it can not find it.

Suggestions? It associated with com5 I tried them all. I even disabled my com1 port and set it to com 1 to no avail so far. Is there a process to getting these working? (I REALLY hate USB to SERIAL devices I would not have bought this if I had know it was USB to SERIAL and not TRUE USB) Grrrr

Anyone got one and figured out something special to make it work? Running on Windows XP via a tablet computer (old fujitsu 3400)

I was just looking at those on ebay. Is it the ELM327?

I figured something fishy..

Do you have access to an older laptop with a serial port?

Anyone on the forum near you? I thought about asking to see if I could borrow a SG for a week or so and leave an ipod or something as collateral..

Well it has no serial port the usb serial com adaptor is "built in" (though yes plenty of older machines around) I fear it may not be compatible with my vehicle :-( I just have to find some other cars to "plug into" and see what happens.

The problem is I do not know what the error means. Does it mean the software can not talk to the ELM327 OR does it mean the device it working fine and can not talk to the CAR OBD II port.

It is not clear on which. Just says hardware interface not found and I have no other 96 or newer cars to mess with.

All my other cars are 1992,1988,1988,1976,1975,1974 mom's 1994 pops 1995,1990

NOW he does have a 98 windstar as well but its not working just now so can not plug into it to find out.

I just have not had time to stalk the neighbors and ask if I cam plug into and blow up there cars :-)
