You will never get mid 20s with 3.73 axles.

If you don't care to dive into a serries of complex and expensive modifications you might want to just try leaving it parked as much as possible.

So my 1,100-mile experiment which gave me 23-mpg around town (with 3.73) didn't actually occur?

Agreed that it is possibly not the optimum rear axle ratio, but trans ratios, tire height, etc, all have to work together. A 3.42 is available, but some numbers will have to be worked.
