The 5 pot TDi weren't conceived for frugal driving
What you got there, is most likely for easy brake cooling during spirited driving.
When hypermiling, you won't be needing that.
Close the gaps (make it reversible) add the airdam underneath and see what gives

Your rims are very open though, and the tyres wide ... that's also costing you a good deal of fuel.


Fabricating an effective air curtain out of the blue is not gonna happen.
The dynamics are a bit too complicated.

So I did it. This took a lot less time and looks a lot better than I thought. I'll have to go through a few tanks of fuel to see if there is a difference.

It's just a convergent duct, and the OEM pieces are available for cheap from a variety of manufacturers. I bought the ducts from a Hyundai Ioniq for $6 each; one of my summer projects this year is to retrofit them to the Prius.
