The sharp transition was one of the main design points recommended by Prof. Kamm. Odds are good for it helping most designs. If length is added as well, it should follow the shape that would be used for a full tail cone, right to the cut-off, except that a small lip on top may help to create a single large vortex to replace the tail cone. On the example given, that lip seems slightly exaggerated for downforce.
