The 2017 Chevy Bolt production pics
GM's next long range electric vehicle, the 2017 Chevy Bolt. It is GM's effort for an affordable $30,000 EV with a (LG Chem batteries) 200 mile range. It has the 'floating roof' design (BMW i3 and current Nissan designs) and some exterior GM details from its stablemate, Chevy Volt. It is a more upright, small CUV/hatchback/sedan design language, primarily designed to be a versatile utilitarian for an American family.
Here's the production Chevy Bolt |
I like it !
I expected something rather reBolting looking, but this I like ! |
I have to admit: I kinda like it.
|
It reminds me of a Honda Fit. Which is a good thing.

We had the Volt in the UK as the Vauxhall Ampera, it sold despite manufacturer and dealer apathy towards it. I understand we won't be getting a rebadged Bolt in RHD.
A genuine 200 mile EV should be a roaring success. A longer range than a Nissan Leaf, cheaper than a Tesla. |
I can't wait for CES this year as several cars have details coming out then. Funny that they release the details at the Consumer Electronics Show instead of an auto show.

The Chevy Bolt, Gamma-platform
1 Attachment(s)
You could probably go to your nearest Buick dealership and size up the Buick Encore (or Opel Mokka for our Euro followers), if you want to approximately gauge the exterior size and interior space of the new Chevy Bolt. The GM Gamma-based platform includes the Buick Encore, Opel Mokka, Chevy Trax, Chevy Aveo and Chevy Sonic.

Hitting the road in Chevy's $30k, 200-mile Bolt EV video - CNET
An early video review was surreptitiously removed by CNET. GM must have been really pissed. http://jalopnik.com/the-electric-che...-it-1751258676 |
Yes that grill fill makes it look like a gasser conversion. This seems all the rage- Kia Soul gassers have a grill block and hideaway tailpipe that keep tricking me in to thinking I've seen a Soul EV. Funny too are the black matte headlight inserts that make it look like a boy racer add-on rather than oem projectors behind flush lenses. Overall, I'll give it a cautious thumbs-up and look forward to a test drive.

More info the the debut of the Bolt:
Green Car Reports first drive of a pre-production model. Here is Autoblog's repost of the press release: 2017 Chevy Bolt EV arrives in late 2016 with 200-mile range I gotta say, it looks nicer than a Leaf. Does anyone know the cd and dimensions of it? It'll be interesting to compare the aero specs. |
That's freaking awesome. The world is changing fast.
My worry is that the public dismisses it as "Just another GM" instead of recognizing how amazing the technology is. We will see. |
That Bolt roofline and body taper is just begging for a quality tailcone....
|
60 kWh battery. That is GIGANTIC Tesla territory.
. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/...power-and-more . |
And a 200 hp motor.
Comes in at a porky 3580 lbs though haha. |
3580 lbs is light compared to other EVs. It's over 1,000 lbs lighter than the Tesla, and only 200 lbs heavier than my TSX gasser.
This is looking like it might be my next car... Now I only have to wait 4 more years to get a used one. Either that, or the Leaf will be thrown in for free with the purchase of its tires. |

The Chevy Bolt EV is evidence that the GM ship is turning. In the right direction.
These are two interesting and helpful articles: How GM Beat Tesla to the First True Mass-Market Electric Car | WIRED 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Specs Released: Battery Pack, Motor Power, And More The Bolt EV is a game changer - and it is THE REASON that Tesla Motors exists. http://www.wired.com/wp-content/uplo...rt-660x371.jpg |
Now it's too bad about the pissing match over the fast charger spec. VHS versus Beta on an Infrastructure scale.

Tesla packs will be made entirely in the USA at Gigafactory #1.

It outweighs my wife's mid-sized SUV!

One of those I know finally abandoned her Suburban for a Prius V. She now has religion about fuel economy, and remarked that the ride isn't too bad either! |
You guys really think 3,600 is a heavy car? All of the weight is below the axle height! That car will corner flat like nothing short of an active suspension car. And 7.0 seconds 0-60 mph will beat most SUV's and commuter cars.

. '72 Camaro Z28 was 7.4 seconds. Gets beat by the Bolt. Which goes on to commute at 140 MPGe. |

GM will sell the Bolt in Europe under its Opel brand as the Ampera-e.
http://media.autoweek.nl/m/f3uyav0byjqt_600.jpg So the name Ampera reappears, as it was used before for the Opel version of the first gen Chevy Volt. The Ampera-e will be more in line with European preferences, the strictly 4-seater sedan lay-out of the Volt/first Ampera hurt sales over here. It will have the same specs as the Bolt and its price is said to be 'attainable'. |
The "hybrid" rear view mirror on the Chevy Bolt EV has been approved!

It seems like insurance companies are quick to write off hybrid vehicles as a total loss for relatively minor damage. I see many reconstructed title Prii in the Portland area.
Hopefully insurance companies will be quick to write off BEVs as a total loss for relatively minor damage. That will make for some fantastic deals on a reconstructed-titled Bolt. |

Interesting time as Lithium batteries have gone from an overpriced novelty item with high costs assuming required replacements to a commodity loss leader where reliability is a must and other "electronics" make the profit.
Who would have thought we would enter the world of lithium being priced like gasoline, something to bring you to the table for other items. |
I think LGchem and Panasonic make a good profit on each cell.

I think the costs of batteries have come down a lot - that is how they can sell a 60kWh car for the same price as a 24kWh car.

The article says the battery accounts for 23% of the $37,500 MSRP. That works out to about $8,600. If GM isn't turning a healthy profit from the remaining $29,000, they are doing something wrong. Electric motors are cheaper than internal combustion engines, and are a simpler drive train. Everything about an EV is simpler than the ICE counterpart, with exception to refueling.
I'd say the vehicle is priced a little high still, considering $29,000 will buy a bigger, more equipped conventional vehicle. |
