I didn't even remember there was more than one power rating for this engine...

The cdi of the First gen had a 0.8 liter engine with 42 horsepower. After that there were two more cdi versions, first one had 45 horsepower and the later one had 54 horsepower.

That 54hp engine might be quite cool for such a small car...

Yes, the engine is great, the transmission not so much.

IIRC that was a single-clutch AMT. People often complain a lot of such transmissions, even though dual-clutch AMTs are often praised. Odd enough, single-clutch AMTs have been way more popular on trucks and even some long-distance coaches.

What model year is the Smart CDI and is it the 41 hp, 45 hp or 54 hp CDI engine?
Sorry, missed this before. It's a 2011, and the 54hp version, so includes a diesel particulate filter. The 54hp versions are definitely easier to find here, and given my experiences so far, I'm glad that's the one I bought - the 45hp really would be borderline for performance.

45 hp for such a small car doesn't really seem so low at all

I have always liked the Smart lineup personally, looked at a 08 or 09 I can't remember before we purchased our 14 Spark. I'm grateful for the size of our Spark but I couldn't help myself wanting to drive a go-cart around. My issue was the concern with our winters and that vehicles design.

Still a neat little car to enjoy.

You would love a 4-seater Smart lookalike made in China that a guy in my hometown had. As it was FWD and front-engined, unlike the Smart, most of the go-cart handling might've been lost though...

With a rear engine, RWD and most of the weight bias always closer to the rear axle, it might compare to a VW Beetle somehow.

I bit my tongue the first time. 36HP should be enogh for anyone.

What if the flat-four was in a more aerodynamic body?
