Spotted 2 smart cars in the past week

Yep, I have seen two new smart cars on the road in the past week. Both were the new 2008 version. Actually I was able to bike next to one for a block or two yesterday. So, I guess you can buy a smart fortwo in the US now.

I had one blow by me here the other day doing about 75mph. Could not get a very good look at it. I sure wish they had the diesel in the US. Is the gasoline version a premium fuel only?

Well, I'd heard they were aiming for January deliveries, and it sounds like it's happening.

Despite the gas car's disappointing FE performance, I think the cars are a good thing for broadening people's horizons & raising awareness about efficiency again (if more in theory, than in practice).

I agree and really we complain about it but there are only 2 other cars that get better than 40 mpg I think, Honda and Toyota, and they don't get much better and the smart is half the price. So in the hands of a eco driver I'm sure even the gas version will be north of 50 mpg. Baby steps.

I like Smart but the ForTwo is disappointing. I'm waiting for the reintroduction of the roadster, if it doesn't come back then thy won't get my business.

Metro MPG made the very valid point about the cars getting people looking , talking and perhaps even thinking about more efficient ways of doing things and for that they should be commended.

Lets face it the "good old days" are here and now.
Whatever you pay for energy and gasoline today will be the lowest price you will ever pay.

The argument "but that's the way we've ALWAYS done it" just isn't acceptable any more , especially so when the increasing world population and declining resources balance is taken into the discussion.

Cheers , Pete.
