You could have a MPGunio or similar check the injector pulse width against a curve of where engine braking starts and have it turn on a light when it falls below that.

In my current and previous car I notice a change in sound in the transmission. When the engine output matches the transmission (rolling) speed I hear a high pitch whine from the gearbox (I presume). I get good mpg figures on the SGII for this period. But it inevitably results in a gradual slowing of the car so it can't be maintained for more than a few minutes.

What vehicle is this? On one with dfco, the pulse width would go to zero. When past this threshold, a signal to the IAC would also indicate drag. This assumes braking, not lugging.
