Lifting bans on oil extraction is an ecological balancing act but right now we need the jobs, GNP, tax and lease fees, and decreased dependency on the middle east. Win, win, win, win. After we get the economy back on track via huge growth in the energy sectors including electrical infrastructure and new nuclear, we can then begin to phase in legislation encouraging energy and carbon conservation with increasingly higher tax rates to continue to pay off the debt.
.
To think that future generations will actually just choose to leave a single drop of carbon fuel still in the ground is incredibly naive. Every last drop will eventually get harvested. And when that is gone (sooner than you want to think about), we will be forced to utilize our second primordial gift of nuclear elements and be left wondering why we drug our feet on that for so long.
.
We might as well stimulate the world economy by increasing production now and then legislate CO2 emissions with increasing world taxes when money gets better.
