My BMW x3 has the battery inside under a cover in the rear floor. Not sealed but fits nice. It just uses the vent kit that comes with most batteries (just a small plastic cover that goes over the top of the battery and a tube that connects the cover to the outside)

Some lead acid batteries have a vent at one end, a small hose can be connected to it and vented outside if you are really worried, but VW bugs had their battery under the rear seat for decades.
