Bears! Camper trailers! Tents!

A tent will protect you from a bear about as well as a soft taco shell protects the contents of a taco.

And a travel trailer will protect you from a bear about as well as a hard taco shell protects the contents of a taco :-)

The camper just gives you enough time to ready your firearm.
If you didn't bring a firearm, then welcome to the food chain.

We can rise above life in the food chain: A basalt mesh-reinforced Kevlar shell with a metallic foil Faraday cage lining and external electrodes charged to 20Kv.

Bulletproof and it leaves a metallic taste on your tongue.

Anything smaller than an anti-tank weapon is likely to just piss off the bear, at least if you're shooting head-on.

Even the biggest bears are no match for a standard 30 caliber rifle at close range. It's the handguns that have issues.

I was thinking something more along the lines of a shotgun. As long as it's not one of those gigantic Alaska brown bears.

I am confused. Are these bears eating your trailer?

That depends. If you are hunting, and can shoot the bear from the side, yes. If the bear is coming straight at you, there's a good chance that (even if you can keep your nerve and actually hit it) the bullet will glance off the skull.

No, it's just that some people seem to have gotten the idea that an ordinary camping trailer will protect you from a bear. Which is strange, since camping trailers are pretty flimsy, and bears are pretty strong. The live trap that the NDOW uses to catch problem bears is a cylinder made of about 1/4 inch stainless steel.

The other thing is that bears generally do not regard humans as food. Keep food away from where you sleep, and you're not likely to have problems. But of course lots of people store food and cook inside their trailers, which makes them bear bait.

Personally, I've had about half a dozen fairly close encounters with bears. (The closest being literally arms length away.) In every case (except one where I don't think the bear even realized I was there), the bear just turned and walked away.
