blown controller...? :(

I've been off site for a while - a bit depondent over a silly mistake whilst disconnectig a battery. - foolishly/lazily assumed that everything was fused, and if something shorted out, I could just replace the fuse. Wrong! - Looks like I may have blown the controller...or controller component?
the model in my Commutacar is;
Curtis Model # 1209B - 6402 Voltage 48 - 72 Volts
Serial # 87025 Current 400 Amps
Help! Any suggestions on repairing? It doesn't seem to come apart, but I know that they can be rebuilt, ( for hundreds of dollars) so they do come apart. How can I take it apart and test the components to replace - and step by step instructions, or any other suggestions, that are affordable.
thanks, Kingsley
