Bodge job fuel flow meter for pre-OBD vehicles

I wonder how long one of these flow meters (designed for water) would last in a fuel line?

flowmeter - CamelBak.com

You could theoretically bodge together a rough calculation for a trip using one of these and your trip meter?

Am I wrong / overambitious here?

I'd skip this one. Calculating fuel consumption just isn't that hard. And this thing is designed to gauge human water consumption, which would be considerably less than a cars fuel consumption. At least my car. And if it failed from fuel pressure that it's not designed for, and your fuel pump kept running it would spray fuel all over wherever you decided to install this thing. Even if your car didn't burst into flame, your mpgs would be really lousy from all the wasted fuel you sprayed all over. Not to mention the pollution...

Nah, I'll skip this one.

That's a good principle mate, but not designed for what you want!

I've been searching and boats use flow meters but not sure to work!

Another option for a flow meter is from an airplane. I used to see flow meters for small planes on ebay. So you might want to check there.
