Some Audi cars now know how long until the light changes...

...in Dallas, Houston, Denver, and D.C. https://jalopnik.com/your-audi-can-n...gto-1823799563

Of course, people say to just watch the crosswalk timer, and others went into a rage because sometimes those count to zero and then restart, because nobody hit the button.

That seems like a poor design.

In the Phoenix area, I have only seen that on side streets, so I only slow down if I see someone waiting. So far, so good.

Here Jalopnik points out that Audi is introducing yet another vulnerability, because people have a strange hobby of saying "They will be hacked!" https://jalopnik.com/street-lights-o...hat-1796514459

I always think they sound like Admiral Ackbar when they do that.

Years ago, when returning to Altus from Dallas, I would pass through Wichita Falls down town. There must have been 10 lights in 10 blocks, but they were timed together. If you started at the first green, and drove the speed limit, the lights changed to green in front of you, but if you tried to go over the speed limit, you would be stopping at every one. Wish my town of Abilene would network the lights together like that. Our lights are each on seperate cycles, and often will catch you at every light.(GRRRRRR)

People insist the lights are timed in the Phoenix area, but everyone speeds and then waits at the red light. They have a pattern, except for those for side streets, but that pattern is usually independent of the speed limit. It was nice to learn the pattern, though.

I only pass one light here in Page.

In Rushin' dash cam vids everybody knows when the light is about to change and they go before it does. Then they hit red light stragglers.

Every time I see a story like this it makes my blood boil.

http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/smartphone-obdii-traffic-light-linkage-32275.html

Xist was the first to thank me in 201506. Audi is following along behind the Eugene, Oregon anarcho-capltalists with a big hammer. Connected signals' list of cities currently 404s.

Here's their Twitter page. I'm reluctant to touch it because I hear Twitter is social media.

Anyone without compunction?

In Florida, plenty of traffic lights had shrouds that went all the way around, and even had filters installed on them so you couldn't make out what was lit from the side, even at night. I was told this was to prevent people from being able to read the lights in other directions when sitting in an intersection. Street racing problems?

Seems this would defeat the purpose of that.

It was the style at the time.

There should be a software program that can coordinate continuously moving slugs of traffic citywide without stops, save the first one at every entry into the grid. Speeds could be set at the optimum for each set of blocks between successive lights (maybe 35 at some, maybe 27 at others.)

I don't know how it is in Texas.

Cities in the PNW have municipal systems that do that. In Germany they call it 'riding the green wave'. My son (up in WA) gets very agitated when he sees the red lights marching toward him instead of away.

It's different in every town. Wichita Falls is timed. Abilene isn't.
