Boston, MA to Gettysburg, PA Trip
My first road trip using enhanced driving techniques took place over the Labor Day weekend and I'm pleased with the results. Route was 1000 miles round trip from Boston, MA to Gettysburg, PA with two stops in between. Used heavy neutral (engine on) P&G, windows up most of the trip and no A/C (drove the long stretches at night so it was cool outside). No mods are made on vehicle other than increased PSI on tires.
Boston, MA to Towanda, PA - Approx. 360 miles. Drove from 12-7am with 90% highway. Averaged 25.5 mpg (26% above highway EPA/33% above overall EPA) on this tank. Normal travel time is 6 hours so it did take me about 1 hour longer to make the trip but well worth the fuel savings. Usually I fuel up before leaving Boston and have about 1 gallon of fuel left when arriving in Towanda. Used 6 less gallons of gas this time!
Towanda, PA to Gettysburg, PA to Elysburg, PA to Boston, MA - Approx. 650 miles. I really saw the savings on this leg of the trip. 90% of this was highway. Averaged 27.75 mpg (32% above highway EPA/39% above overall EPA) on this tank. While most of this tank was driven during the day with normal to heavy traffic I still saw nice mpg numbers. Took about additional 2 hours of driving time vs. old driving techniques but, again, well worth it. With great country hills to coast down was able to P&G for 1-2 miles in some spots!
Overall, I estimate a $50-60 fuel cost savings on this trip using my new fancy driving techniques!
