Question Can I Convert a 3.4L to a 3.1L in a 92 Grand Prix w/Manual Tranny

I need help! I bought a used '92 Grand Prix with the 3.4L and a 5 speed manual transmission. The engine needs to be rebuilt and I don't have a lot of expendable income to sink into this car, so I was thinking about converting it to a 3.1L V6. My understanding is the 3.1L is much easier to maintain and parts are not so hard to find or as expensive as parts for the 3.4 liter. The power loss does not bother me. Would I need a new computer for the car? What about the wiring harness? Most of all will it work with the 5 speed manual transmission? The 5 speed manual tranny is the reason I bought this car. I've always wanted one in a mid 90's model Grand Prix, but the engine issues are making wish I had not bought it. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Here's some info on the engine:

Wow, that must have been one of the last years for a midsized GM with a stick. I thought you could only get a stick in a Cavalier, Camaro, and trucks.

I have no specific knowledge of the 3.4 vs 3.1L, but I can say that sticking with whatever is already in there is usually a lot easier.

The 3.4 is a headache to work on, and has gotta cost a fortune. The 3.1 is tough as nails, cheap and easy to work on, and has great low end torque. And they run pretty much forever.

I'm sure it can be done without too much hassle. GM parts especially of this era are very interchangeable. What I would do is sign up here.

The BEST Source For All Your GM 60šV6 Needs

They should either have an existing writeup, or would be able to tell you everything you need for the swap.

Your best bet may be just getting a doaner car that runs, switch over everthing that applys to the 3.1L. Good luck.
