can i just drain the fluid out of my steering pump and loop the lines or will

the pump "burn up" as a few mechanics said? and yes i am trying to figure out a new belt route but in the meantime...

Those pumps are remarkably durable- I've had one survive quite a bit of time while it was "dry". But I wouldn't chance it. Don't turn the pump if there's no juice in there! In the meantime, try to forget about it.
