Motorcycle Tail Fin

I am not a motorcycle guy but I like this. I pulled this off of Facebook the other day. Whoever did this had a great imagination.

My Boat Tail peaking out of my garage. Went to Deming, NM yesterday to do an astronomy program at Rock Hound SP. Bucked head winds up to 20 mph going but kept mpg up by doing 65 mph on the interstate. Got off at Akea Flats and took Hwy 549 to the park so I could do 55 mph. Had no wind on the trip back to Las Cruces but it was only enough to bring my composite average up to 19.7 mpg.

motorcycle tail fin

Boss Hoss has a tail fin like that on their trike. The Boss Hoss is a 454 V8 engine, which doesn't seem to fit here in this web site! Costs of the machine is around 35,000 bucks. Some of the motorcycles also have nitro kits!

Too long, the proportions aren't right.

Compare with the Cadzilla Bike

I have had a couple of motorcycles with actual tail fins and their performance can be a bit of a shock.

First was a (stock) 1970s Quasar, a low production feet forward (British motorcycle phrase for recumbent) and the second was a modification of a Yamaha T-max 500cc superscooter that turned it into a feet forward, the ComforTmax. The third photo compares the two.

Tail fins like this make the bikes 'auto-stable' - when a cross wind blows, they run straight. But this is because the side force generated by the tail fin is counter-acted by the bike rolling towards the wind and they can roll pretty quickly, which can itself the disconcerting. The Quasar had the additional problem that while the bike rolled sharply into the wind and ran straight, the rider feels like they would be blown out the side of the bike, so it wasn't that comfortable in cross winds. But here I am talking about severe cross winds, where no other bikes will be seen being ridden.
