Actually the further forward the better; you want to make the air flow over your car rather than under.

If there is enough room you can also aim at diverting the air sideways by curving the airdam. My car does not have a full air dam but just 2 rubber flaps at a 45 degree angle from 1/4 width under the front grille edges to the front wheel wells. I believe that's OEM.
