At worldwide $45 per barrel low costs, the new discoveries will probably stay in the ground for a long time. Include national fracking production the price might even go as low as $25 a barrel.
Sick and tired of politics, but no one can restart those coal states and mobilize those coal workers their 'promised' jobs back. The soon-to-be-impotent EPA and the kumbaya Paris Climate talks will be told to pound sand...

Why so sad?
We are likely already past peak oil, battery and hybrids are here to stay, manufacturers have shown they can make meaningful and signifigant increases in the fuel economy of liquid fuel only vehicles.
The only thing that isn't going to happen is the crash and burn of society that the eco-terrorists were hoping for upon the summit of "peak oil".

The coal isn't dead, we need it so we can power the coal burning electricity plants to recharge the batteries. Hopefully what is dead is relying on oil and energy from other countries.

Coal also produces steel and coal fly ash is used in cement.
Electrical, steel, cement, thorium and plant food from one substance that everyone seems to hate.

I've said it before, but 100 years from now, when people are asked what has negatively impacted their life the most, global climate change will be very low on the list, and probably not mentioned by the majority of people.

Sure, there will be big consequences, but they will be relatively slow to occur, and give plenty of time for adaptation / mitigation.

Or More likely they will blame the terrible consequences on something else and not correlate behavior with consequences
