I remember some "progressive" carbs with vacuum-operated second stage barrel, but then it still lacks some altitude compensating abilities of an EFI.

Ford had the variable venturi 2bbl carb. ISTR a variant that was like half a 4bbl on some inline 4 cylinders. Punch the throttle and the second hole would open.
