compact truck project

Newbie here, I am in the planing stages of a compact truck project, something that will get ok mpg for commuting but still be able to do the required tasks i need a truck for. I really wish i still had one of my CRX's or my old chevette after the last year of driving a F250 for work!

What do you need a truck for? I've found a flat bed trailer pulled behind a compact car gets way better mileage and is easier to load and unload then a pickup truck making it more useful, but I also have a job that we more or less have to have a truck to do our work, so I understand truck needs, but enjoy not needing a truck for personal use.
