COOLEST HYBRID EVER! Seriously!

Just the other day, I got to see the COOLEST HYBRID EVER!!!

Only thing is, I CAN'T tell you about it!

Through my work, I ended up being on a project that it turned out was about an amazing new hybrid. It's been in works for years now.

However, it's not out yet, and I had to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Somebody please remind me on September 23rd, 2012 about this thread. The new product should be out in the public at that time, so I can actually talk about it after that!

-Ben

MetroMPG 06-29-2012 02:47 PM

Oh, you tease.

Surely you can say... Series or parallel? Plug-in?

Big 3 or other?

bennelson 06-29-2012 03:42 PM

Series.
Not big 3.

OK, not wishing to break your non-disclosure... Can I guess what the Coolest Hybrid Ever would be like? I'm assuming this is a real thing which I haven't heard of before.

So my own Coolest would be like the Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid. Or like the C-X16.
I'd like a natural gas burning turbine and only enough batteries for regeneration. Lighter batteries, lightweight ICE, no transmission. Oh, yeah, it should be affordable.

Ben -

Are you series-ess, :o ?

I say start googling European Hybrid car startups.

There are all sorts of "hybrids" and "EVs" out there. The improtant question is can the average person afford it, is it available NOW and is there any catch, IE single passenger, top speed limit of 43 mph, requires plugging in, etc. .

I use to work for Baker Equipment who made the electric postal vehicles under the Clinton administration. Well, the economy collapse filled that project, there was nothing wrong with the technology.

SoobieOut 06-29-2012 09:55 PM

I think the Audi hybrid that won the Le Mans was pretty cool stuff.

Frank Lee 06-29-2012 10:02 PM

The point of this is what?

jakobnev 06-30-2012 04:31 AM

Frank -

Well he had to vent a bit so he wouldn't explode.

Piwoslaw 06-30-2012 06:46 AM

Now he wants us to explode! http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-pi...re2536-grr.gif

JethroBodine 06-30-2012 07:33 AM

Agreed, Piwoslaw.

Hey, Ben. On Sept. 23 don't forget...

user removed 06-30-2012 07:33 AM

If you had to sign a NDA then their patent process has not been approved. If not then why would you have to sign any NDA. That means a provisional application, with a yet to ne submitted full filing, that may be rejected outright if it is determined to consist of prior art that has been combined in such a way to be "obvious to someone educated in the art".

My guess would be the provisional has been filed but the complete application is yet to be filed (possibly on the date 9/23/12). My other guess would be it may never see the light of day as a commercial enterprise (the vast majority don't). It is amusing that the major manufacturers still think that the normal protection time of just over 17 years is not significant. Maybe they work on a different mental schedule than the rest of us.

Probably would just have been better to wait until the date when you can reveal the new "miracle" hybrid Ben, but It does seem like we have been down this road a few million times. The clock is ticking on mine at just over 2 years now, so I would be very skeptical of anyone falling over themselves to use a particular design, if it even passes the novelty test, which becomes more difficult every year, especially when you think globally.

Mech

A €13K pedacycle is affordable? Not to me. Also the range is abysmal. Next!

NachtRitter 07-01-2012 02:35 AM

Sorry, I already know about the COOLEST HYBRID EVAR and it's already public knowledge... nothing coming out in Sept can be cooler.

JethroBodine 07-01-2012 07:41 AM

Hey, Ben. On Sept. 23 don't forget...

bennelson 07-01-2012 07:23 PM

Actually, a hybrid ice-cream truck would make a lot of sense.

They do plenty of slow-speed and start and stop. An electrical system would make sense to run the coolers as well!

(No it is not an ice-cream truck!)

NeilBlanchard 07-01-2012 11:04 PM

I hear that Mitsubishi is coming out with a serial hybrid Outlander, but from other sources say it will be a serial/parallel:

Hey Ben -- remember to tell us about it on September 23rd...

Piwoslaw 07-02-2012 01:33 AM

Did anyone mention September 23rd?

TedV 07-02-2012 11:54 AM

Lotus has an amazing sounding serial hybrid coming, called the Evora 414E...

Literally!!

Quote:

Lotus and Harman International have developed the “HALOsonic suite of noise solutions” to generate—get this—engine sounds inside the vehicle through the audio system. And it also produces similar noises outside the vehicle through front- and rear-mounted speakers, so as to provide a warning to pedestrians that may not have noticed the flashy sports car barreling towards them. There are no fewer than four driver-selectable engine sounds from which to choose, two of which have been designed to mimic engines—a V-6 and, yes, a V-12—a third that makes a “futuristic” sound, and a fourth that combines the two types of sounds.

Frank Lee 07-05-2012 02:59 PM

I like the sounds my awesome hybrid (pedal/electric) Songi make: a barely audible electric motor whine; the sound of the semi-slick tires (funny how they sound different when I ride on the white stripe on the edge of the highway vs the blacktop); the sound of the wind as it passes through my head cavity via the upwind and downwind ears.

NeilBlanchard 07-05-2012 03:15 PM

I didn't know about all the electronic "lookout for me" noises. I think this is largely a solution in search of a problem...

The Evora 414E has 2.5X the torque that the "regular" Evora has, and the former goes 0-60MPH in 4 seconds flat, which beats the already incredibly quick Tesla Roadster. It will be very interesting to see how the 414E does in the FE department...

should we consider using EE instead? energy efficiency? just efficiency?

NachtRitter 07-05-2012 04:21 PM

It'll only be a matter of time before someone hacks into the sound-generation files and replaces the "futuristic" sounds with "porntastic" sounds... anyone saying they didn't see that coming is a liar or a fool.

JethroBodine 07-06-2012 11:08 PM

Hey Ben. Guess what I'm going to say...

Au contraire, mon frere. Protecting pedestrians is the nom du jour for those armies of regulators who need to continually justify their government salaries by coming up with new ways that automobiles are Evil. This noise-making nonsense fits right into the flow.

Piwoslaw 07-11-2012 07:50 AM

What was it about September 23rd?

I rather have the big rig engine braking sound, but its not nearly loud enough, we need it amplified so deaf people can hear the car and blind people can see it.

Motor 26kw
Sound protection system 1mw.
