FWIW, I'm not talking about big rigs here.
P&G is one place where manuals really outshine autos, and it carries over to towing. Unless the trailer is completely disgusting aero-wise, the added mass carries a lot of weight in the glides. I do a lot less P&G while towing because it's slower on the pulses, but I still do it. And my car hit 200k last week, still on the original clutch.
If 40 mph steady is a realistic choice, then pulses up to 70 on the same road probably aren't- no matter what you're carrying.
