I think the abrasion on the sidewall says otherwise. I think it says the tire was run very nearly flat at some point in time.

It looks more to me like the sidewall got nicked by something with a bit of an edge. Our minivan tire had a similar one, just larger, and wasn't deflated. A squared-off curb, a sharp bit of trash, something like that was my guess.
