Daox's Taurus adventure

The Paseo is currently out of comission due to the exhaust being totally rotted out. I have a new stainless OEM replacement on the way, but until then I'm driving a 93 Ford Taurus. Not the image of fuel efficiency by far! The EPA ratings for it are 18 city, 27 highway, 21 combined. So far, I've put down 1.5 tanks in this thing.

The first tank was abour 200 miles and I was just settling in with the car. I drove the speed limit and learned how it shifted. This tank got me 26.5 mpg. Not too bad, but disappointingly not even EPA, though not far off either.

The second tank was a full tanks worth of driving, 400 miles. With this tank I tweaked my acceleration techniques, did the speed limit steadily and started doing some neutral coasting with the car. This netted me 28.5 mpg.

I'll likely need to fill up at the end of this week and we'll see what P&G with engine on coasting got me with the current tank.

3.0L, nothing fancy. Results thus far by looking at the guess (gas) gauge with P&G are looking very good.

Are you able to do any upkeep on the car?

More than likely it needs spark plugs or a PCV valve. You can get that money back out in one tank.

I'll be honest, I haven't done anything to the car at all. I haven't even checked tire pressure! (since moving I haven't found my gauge! ) I'm 80% sure the tires are low on air. The car normally just sits most of the year.
